The Problem

Yarra Valley Singers required a versatile, portable choir riser system that could accommodate performers of varying ages and be easily transported between different performance venues.

With a number of older members in the choir, comfort and accessibility were particularly important. The group needed tiered platforms deep enough to allow singers to sit on chairs during performances when required, rather than standing for extended periods.

As the choir performed at multiple locations, the system also needed to be compact to store, straightforward to transport and easy to assemble and dismantle.

The Constraints

The project presented several important design considerations:

• Performer Comfort: Deeper platforms were essential to accommodate chairs, allowing older choir members to sit comfortably during performances.

• Curved Configuration: A gently curved tiered arrangement was preferred to create a cohesive choir formation with good visibility and presentation.

• Portability: The risers needed to be regularly transported between venues, making compact storage and manageable components a priority.

• Tiered Visibility: Three rows with 200mm height increments were required to provide clear sightlines for performers and audiences.

• Safety: A modular handrail system was required along three sides of the tiered structure.

• Durability: The decks needed a hard-wearing carpet finish suitable for regular transport, assembly and use.

A particularly important feature was the use of deeper-than-standard choir riser platforms. By incorporating 1m deep decks, the system provided the flexibility for singers to stand or sit as needed, making performances more comfortable and accessible for older choir members.

The curved configuration also created an attractive choir formation, while the modular design allowed the entire system to be dismantled and transported between performance locations.

The completed installation provided Yarra Valley Singers with a practical, comfortable and professional choir riser system tailored to their specific needs.

The three-tier curved arrangement created an effective performance setting, while the generous 1m deep platforms allowed older performers the option of sitting on chairs without leaving their designated positions.

Equally important, the compact modular construction meant the choir could transport and set up its own tiered seating arrangement at different venues, without relying on permanent staging facilities.
