The Problem

Launceston Christian School required a customised tiered seating and performance solution to accommodate large groups of students, teachers and other adults during school assemblies, presentations and special events.

Rather than using conventional seating with individual chairs, the school wanted students to sit directly on tiered stage decks, providing clear sightlines and maximising seating capacity.

The design also needed to incorporate separate seating areas for teachers and other adults, a central performance space and a dedicated mixing desk position for managing sound and audiovisual requirements.

The Constraints

The project presented several important design considerations:

• Student Seating: A large tiered structure capable of accommodating students seated directly on the stage decks.

• Height and Visibility: Eight tiers rising in 300mm increments to a maximum height of 2.4m.

• Separate Adult Seating: Two smaller tiered seating platforms positioned on either side of a central performance space.

• Integrated Mixing Desk: A dedicated technical control position incorporated into the uppermost tier, providing an elevated location for sound and audiovisual operation.

• Safety: Modular handrails along three sides of the main tiered structure.

• Durability: Hard-wearing black carpeted decks suitable for frequent school use.

A particularly practical feature was the integration of the mixing desk into the uppermost level of the main seating structure. This provided a dedicated technical operating position within the tiered layout, without requiring a separate freestanding control platform elsewhere in the venue.

The Result

The completed installation provided Launceston Christian School with a substantial, purpose-designed tiered seating and performance solution.

The main eight-tier structure accommodates students seated directly on the carpeted decks, while the smaller side platforms provide dedicated seating for teachers and other adults. The central performance area creates a focal point for assemblies, presentations and school performances.

With the mixing desk integrated into the top tier, the design also accommodates the technical requirements of school events without compromising the overall seating arrangement.
